West Point ain’t no scholarship

Posted by John Reed on

Resembles a scholarship West Point cadets do not pay cash out of pocket or incur dollar-denominated loans to attend West Point. That resembles a scholarship. On occasion when discussing the Army football team, I have said they have 3,800 guys on scholarship. But that was athletic shorthand. But getting away from that shorthand, there are vast differences between the West Point deal and a scholarship. West Point is not a grant A scholarship is simply a grant, a gift contingent only on your remaining in the degree-program in question and maintaining passing grades. To collect your education benefits at West Point,...

Trump is Herbert Hoover redux

Posted by John Reed on

I recently said Trump’s trade policy was essentially the same as the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff which caused the Great Depression—the New Deal and the Fed prolonged it.  In their 11/4/15 issue, the Wall Street Journal had an op-ed by George Melloan, author of a book on the Great Depression. He said the same. The title is “Donald Trump, Meet Herbert Hoover.” Google the title to read it online. Sample quote: “…if [Trump] is taken at his word, he is one of the most ardent opponents of free trade ever to seek high office in the U.S.” A trade war of...

The price of sugar is the US is double that of the rest of the world. The reason is Rubio and other sleazy senators find it profitable to enable the Fanjuls to stay really wealthy by endlessly renewing a ridiculous sugar tariff which WSJ says may be...

It is very common for people who did not go to West Point to claim they could have, but turned it down. He did make a false claim Writer Ben Shaprio at DailyWire—whatever that is—says Carson did not make a false claim. http://www.dailywire.com/news/960/no-ben-carson-didnt-lie-about-west-point-its-ben-shapiro?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_content=110615-news&utm_campaign=benshapiro Here is exactly what Carson said in his autobiography: At the end of my twelfth grade I marched at the head of the Memorial Day parade. I felt so proud, my chest bursting with ribbons...

Two points Trump understands but few others do

Posted by John Reed on

Trump repeatedly makes two valid points that the media and public do not get: 1. Competitors must be unpredictable. 2. Absence of a specific plan is not proof of no chance for success. Cannot be predictable Media people keep trying to nail Trump down on this or that. He keeps protesting that he cannot answer because it would make him predictable. Even on carrying a gun, he refused to say when he did and when he did not. He’s right. That does not apply to everything. But it does apply to negotiation, sports coaching, war, electoral campaigns, business, playing cards....
