You are on your own. The government is risking your economy.

On TV and in one-on-one conversations, I keep hearing stuff along the lines of this is a “great country” so nothing really bad is about to happen.

The covid 19 shutdown closed more of the economy than the Great Depression did at its peak.

Fact.
.
This “great country” stuff, in contrast, is Easter Bunnyish.
.
The federal government took the pop of a stock market bubble in 1929 and turned it into a decade-long Great Depression through overly tight money and all sorts of nutty government experiments on business and programs like the CCC. Absent government getting out of its lane, it probably would have been a one or two year recession.
.
If this is a “great country,” how did that happen? Politicians want power, not national greatness. They told the public they were saving them from business and the public believed it. They STILL think the New Deal saved the nation from the Depression. It deepened and prolonged it. “American greatness” had almost no effect on the FDR bull in a China shop bumbling.
.
The “great country” has recently engaged in three extremely long, extremely expensive wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq plus miscellaneous mission creep after the middle east wars seemingly ended. About 60,000 KIA. Does a “great country” do that? No country is perfect, but that was below average to say the least.

America is 330 million people and a geographic location and a history. But there is no American giant saintly being in charge.

At present, America is run by Republicans politicians whose overwhelming concern is getting reelected in November and holding power in the Senate and regain it in the House.
.
Democrats are not enthrall to any vision of making America great. They are consumed with taking the White House and Senate away from Republicans. They will destroy the nation’s economy if necessary to get power. They figure they can blame the Republicans as they did in 1932.
.
They are obsessed with power. They have no plan of what to do with it, other than to change laws to make it harder for Republicans to ever regain power.

This is not a formula for some middle school civics vision of a “great America” to emerge.
.
The Republicans see a need to throw federal money at the currency situation to avoid losing in November. Trillions. This is highly inflationary and risks horrific damage to the American economy and dollar and people. They did not even think twice about doing it. They, like the Democrats assume that the American people do not understand any of this, which is true, so they can blame China or WHO or Dem governors and so on if things go bad.

There is no great noble being named America in DC running things. Just hundreds of politicians seeking to get or retain power. You need to do a “great” job of taking care of YOURSELF and your family. No one up above you is doing that.
