Vaccinations need to be mandatory. The right not to be vaccinated is a right to infect the innocent with a deadly disease.

Posted by John T. Reed on

The claim that no one should be forced to get vaccinated seems to be near universal. The basic idea seems to be that Americans never required mandatory vaccinations. That is a barefaced lie.
.
And the basis now is alleged to be basic American liberty. That is illogical and arguably illegal. There are many laws like nuisance that prohibit you from doing something on your property that physically adversely affects your neighbors. The right to infect, which this new right could be called, is like the right to have a bonfire on your property, an ember from which burns down your neighbor’s house.
.
About the only difference is that a deadly virus is microscopic and not visible with the naked eye like the ember. That is a distinction with no moral or scientific basis.
.
What is really going on is the public in general are stupid. Too dumb to understand that there can be no right to infect. You cannot stab another, or shoot them or poison them with anthrax or arsenic or sleeping pills.
.
For sure when you move from those things to refusing to get vaccinated then getting close to an unprotected person you are morally and legally moving as from first-degree murder to second degree murder to manslaughter to negligent homicide.
.
Here is a definition from a Nolo book: behaves in a way that shows extreme, reckless disregard for life and results in the victim's death.
.
Here is a definition of involuntary manslaughter: when a person causes the death of another during a lawful act carried out with a high level of negligence.
.
Whereas a felony murder occurs during the commission of a premeditated crime involving a violent component with a reasonable chance of harm occurring, a misdemeanor manslaughter charge covers any similar situation which lacks at least one of those elements.
.
Those could describe an anti-vaxxer who infects and thereby kills an innocent.
.
Technically, crimes must be named in statutes and viruses may not have been dealt with by state legislatures. But morally, if you increase your chances of being infected and go to close proximity with unprotected people, you are morally culpable if they get infected.
.
But legally, right now, the fashion among the demagogues is to tell people what they want to hear. You have a right not to get vaccinated, and that implies a right to get infected and to infect others.
.
That is nuts.
.
It is also the consensus.
.
This error in thinking, can produce a result like the plagues of old where the public did not understand the cause and they engaged in practices that increased infection and all sorts of goofy “cures” like sacrificing the most beautiful child to the Gods or self flagellation or increased attempts to please God.
.
Requiring vaccination reduces spread and deaths. Allowing anti-vaxxers to refuse vaccinations increases death of innocents. How can we think that is okay, that the right not to be vaccinated—a two-second pinprick—is more important than the innocent’s right to live?
.
This is totally nuts.
